Visit to Mary Sumner House in Westminster - Mothers' Union Headquarters
Romans 8: 28 says this: And we know that in all thing God works for the good of those who love Him! One shouldn't doubt BUT going to London on a Tube strike Day!!?!
Heather, Ellen, Janet and John set out by car at 6.30am. We were amazed at the absence of traffic going into the Capital and even more amazed at the volume of traffic coming out. We parked the car on the reserved driveway in Hammersmith, caught the 211 bus to Waterloo (using our bus passes!) sat back and enjoyed the scenes of London from the upper deck of a red bus. One hour 20 minutes later we arrived at Westminster and entered the "Home of the Mothers' Union" as Lynn Temby our Worldwide President called it. Yes we were actually early and were greeted by Lynn who remembered lunching with us in October last year.
Coffee, midday prayers, lunch and then we were able to roam around the 4 storey building dedicated in 1915 now 100 years old, looking at the artefacts, the chapel which had hassocks from different Diocese, Bath and Wells was edged with swans. The chapel is Licensed for marriages. There was correspondence on show from Mary Sumner to various persons regarding her vision for a building in such a prominent place. We were amused by the correspondence with a certain Mrs Maude as to the need for such a building at the time! Mary Sumner won the day!! We were shown the Quota Book of the churches that gave to the project - we could only find ROWBERROW?!
There was a large mural in the conference room consisting of approximately 320 A4 size embroideries from Diocese around the world who came to the 1998 Worldwide Council. The embroidery for Bath and Wells was superb.
We ended with a rededication of the building and ourselves to the work of the Mothers' Union in the spirit of our founder. We were all given a booklet of the history of this amazing building set between Parliament and Westminster Abbey.
An extra bonus was being able to attend the 5.00pm Evensong in Westminster Abbey before our return journey back to the car and home. Romans 8: 28 !!!
